01 / More than a beach
The island has layers

Old stone. Warm water.
A different rhythm.

Zanzibar can be as lazy or as curious as you need it to be. We match the coast, hotel and pace to the trip you have just had—or the escape you need now.

Spend a morning in Stone Town, sail in the afternoon, then protect the next day from plans entirely. Balance is the point.

Six coasts, six different moods

Choose the beach.
Change the whole holiday.

The right Zanzibar beach depends on how you like to spend a day. Start with the atmosphere and activities, then choose a hotel with the right setting.

The northern tip01

Nungwi

Lively evenings, dhow heritage and sea days.

Nungwi brings a traditional fishing and boat-building coast together with a lively choice of restaurants and beach stays. Choose it when you want the ocean without giving up a social evening. West-facing stretches are particularly appealing at sunset.

Choose it for
Travellers who enjoy activity, dining choice and a sociable base.
Know before you book
The exact side of Nungwi matters. Ask about the hotel’s beach access, tides and nearby evening noise rather than assuming every northern hotel has the same setting.
Plan a Nungwi stay
Northwest coast02

Kendwa

Wide sand, swimming and an unhurried sunset.

Kendwa’s west-facing beach catches the evening light and is less affected by dramatic tidal retreat than many east-coast beaches. It is a strong starting point if easy access to the sea matters more than a long list of excursions.

Choose it for
Beach-first stays, couples and families who want swimming time.
Know before you book
Swimming still depends on sea conditions and local advice. Some stays are near entertainment venues; tell us whether you want a quiet room or a livelier evening.
Plan a Kendwa stay
Southeast coast03

Paje

Kite sails, a broad lagoon and an active beach rhythm.

Paje’s shallow lagoon and wind-driven kitesurfing scene give it a different energy. At low tide the shore opens into a wide landscape of sand and tidal pools; when the water returns, the colour changes again. Add a lesson, a café stop or a day with no plan.

Choose it for
Active travellers, kitesurfers and visitors who like a social beach scene.
Know before you book
Tides strongly affect swimming from shore. Kite lessons and sailing depend on wind, conditions and operator availability; plan them separately from your accommodation.
Plan a Paje stay
Southeast village coast04

Jambiani

Village life, long beach walks and slower days.

Jambiani’s appeal is the relationship between the village and the sea: fishing boats, seaweed cultivation and a long stretch of pale sand. It offers a village-centred alternative for travellers who want to settle into the coast’s everyday rhythm.

Choose it for
Longer relaxed stays, beach walks and respectful local encounters.
Know before you book
The lagoon changes markedly with the tide. Do not step into cultivated seaweed plots, and ask before photographing people or entering working spaces.
Plan a Jambiani stay
Northeast coast05

Matemwe

A quieter shoreline with reef adventures offshore.

Matemwe pairs a broad east-facing beach with access to boat trips toward the reefs around Mnemba. Choose a slower land-based stay, then set aside a day for guided snorkelling or diving when conditions permit.

Choose it for
Quiet escapes, ocean sunrises and travellers interested in reef trips.
Know before you book
Expect a tidal shoreline. A reef excursion does not include entry to private Mnemba Island; boat departure, marine fees and access are confirmed with the operator.
Plan a Matemwe stay
The eastern peninsula06

Michamvi

Two coastlines, and a bay that catches the sunset.

Michamvi rewards a more precise choice of location. The Kae side looks west across Chwaka Bay for evening light, while Pingwe faces the Indian Ocean. That change of orientation gives this peninsula a character of its own.

Choose it for
Couples and travellers choosing a particular sea view or sunset setting.
Know before you book
Specify the bay-facing or ocean-facing side. Tides, beach access and the atmosphere around each property differ; the peninsula is not one interchangeable beach.
Plan a Michamvi stay

The tide is part of the holiday.

Northwestern beaches such as Kendwa usually offer a longer swimming window from shore. Much of the east coast has a shallow lagoon that changes substantially through the tide cycle. A hotel pool can be useful if you want a swim at any hour. Check local sea conditions, stay clear of boat routes and reef habitats, and agree boat activities with an experienced operator.

Tell us what matters most: quiet, family time, kitesurfing, restaurants, sunsets or reef trips. We confirm the beach setting, hotel, room and transfer before you book.

Mainland Tanzania & Zanzibar / Before arrival

Entry insurance.
Start with your arrival point.

Foreign visitors subject to the inbound insurance requirement must obtain the prescribed cover. Mainland implementation began on 1 October 2026. Use the official insurer for your first point of entry and arrange your policy before travelling.

First entry / Mainland Tanzania

National Insurance Corporation (NIC)

For your initial arrival through a mainland airport, seaport or land border.

Official NIC insurance portal

Visiting both mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar? NIC confirms that a valid inbound policy obtained at your first point of entry can cover subsequent travel between the two, subject to its terms. You do not need to buy a second mandatory policy just because your covered journey includes both.

Check eligibility, exemptions, the current premium, dates and benefits on the official portal. Keep your certificate available offline. Insurance charges are separate from visa fees and are included in a Pinnacle package only when your written quote expressly includes them.

Also confirm suitable personal travel cover for your activities, medical needs and evacuation. For a mountain trek, ask your insurer about the maximum altitude and helicopter rescue; an entry certificate alone does not confirm these benefits.
